DUNEDIN AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUE

EVENING SPORTS MEETING.

There was a fair attendance of spectators at the lilti; of trie series ol evening sports meetings promoted by the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Ojub, held last evening on the Caledonian Ground Ihe weather conditions were ideal, there being an almost *_iitiro absence of wind, and tne track was in splendid order. Added interest was lent to uie meeting, as many of the men selected o take part in the Now Zealand championships next Saturday were competing, and last night's racing was a good try out. The entries lor the nve events were very satisfactory indeed, and the fields were large, with one exception (One Mne VValk). ihe 75 Yards Handicap was run in three heats and a final. Wilson won his lioat &asny, and running well, " made goodby ineiies in the linal, which was very keenly contested. Austin, oil' scratch, succeeded in gaining second place in the Broad Jump, lie cleared 19it 3in, and was the only competitor who niceeeded in finding tho board The 440 if-ards Handicap provided a very good finish. Swinney and Crimp were in good lorrn, but left their linal elfort until too late. Anderson, tne winner, who ran ott 25 yards, kept up a good solid pace, but he had nothing in reserve at the finish, and if the race had continued a little further Swinney wouid easily have outdistanced him. Perkins wasjompeting m this race and also in the 7qr Yards iiandicap, but h© was not placed in dither, and appeared to be a little beio,w form. Buchanwas disappointing m the One Milo Walk Handicap. Jrie was going strong until well on in the third lap, and he looked as if he was going to win easily from Stewart, but the latter kept up a solid pace througl out, and on approaching the straight at the finish broke away, -winning by 20 yards. Frye was in splendid form, and won the Two Mile Handicap off scratch in hollow fashion in 9inin 13sec. The handicapping, which was in the hand/? of Mr W. M'Donald, ihad evidently been carried out with care and judgment. This was particularly noticeable in the 75 Yards and 4*o Yards liandioaps, in each of which events the competitors finished in a bunch. Mr J. T Hamann acted as superintendent, and Mr W Rudkin made an efficient starter. The meeting was conducted without a hitch, the various events being run off. very expeditiously.
