TOKOMAIRIRO FARMERS' CLUB.

ANNUAL SHOW.

Somewhat unfavourable weather conditions prevailed yesterday for the forty-eighth annual show of the Tokomairiro Farmers' Club, held on the club's show ground at Mi ton. Fortunately the ground was firm and fairly dry, but the atmosphere was somewhat cold, and light; showers fell onoo or twice - during the afternoon. Fortunately for 'the society's finances these untoward circumstances in no way affected the attendance, the townspeople and the residents of tho surrounding district flocking in to watch tho judging .of the sleek, heavy-stepping draughts and the pnuicing light horses and listen alternately to tho musio of the Milton Band and the incessant chatter of the showmen and cheap-jacks, who find the country show a congenial field for the exerciao of their accomplishments. The entries this year constituted a marked advance oyer those of last year, and a uniform quality was maintained in all sections. The takings at the gate amounted to £43, as against £36 4s for last year's show—also a wet day. Considerable interest! was manifested by tho public in a number of competitions which were held during tho day. All the officials, inokding the secretary (Mr A. Scott), worked hard to mako matters run smoothly.

_ Both the judges of tho heavy horses spoko in high terms of the quality of the animals that wero brought into the ring for their inspection. Ono of thorn (Mr Martin, of Oamaru) has attonded a good many horse shows this year, including those at Melbourne and Geelong, and other smaller shows in New Zealand, and ho was emphatically of opinion that the show of draughts yesterday was a good one for a country show, and spoko well for the district. His fellow judge (Mr Weir, of Papakoio) was a former exhibitor of draught stock at Milton, and, besides endorsing these remarks, he said he observed a big change for the better in. tho quality of the horses in tho district. Coming to tho various classes, the aged stallions were a very good lot, from whioh Baron Everest stood out on his own, the other two horses being fairly good' however. Baron Everest is a good stamp of animal of good substance and typo. There was only ono entry in the three-year-old horses, but he was well worthy of first prize. Five two-year-olds were marshalled into the ring, ' but it was only a fair class. The first prizetaker was a fair colt, but there was nothing else outstanding aa far as quality goes. In the yearling colts, however, the first prize animal was a really good colt, and one Ijkely to be heard of again. Tho championship for stallions was won by Muir and Rendall's Baron Everest, with Lord Menteith reserve champion. The mares were a good all-round •lot. The first ring brought in was the brood marc.% in which there were two entrants, ono with foal at foot and tho other in foal. Both wore good marcs and well worth a prize, but honours went to tho one with foal at foot. Later the samo animal succeeded in annexing tho championship for mares. _ For a country show the three-year-old fillies were a really decent lot, but the two year fillies, though a fair muster, presented nothing uncommon.' The first and second prize-takers were good specimens, but beyond that' there was nothing calling for comment. Tho yearling fillies were a good and, as in tho case of the winning yearling colt, tho winning animal should be hoard of later. The third prize-taker was a (rood animal, but was shown in poor condition. Men she is made up she will do better. The dry marcs were a good strong class, with not a weak mare in the ring. Light horse sections generally attracted good entries, and some splendid hacks were seen in the ting. There wero no thoroughbreds forthcoming, but there was plenty of qualitv in some of the beasts that wero exhibited in the roadster and hack classes

Some good' cattle were exhibited, but the fact that there was not much competition renders any comment unnecessary. In Romncy sheep and aged rains comprised a very good lot, being mostly true to style and shown in good condition, Tho remaining sections as a whole were very good. The ram hogigets wero also a good class, comprising about half a dozen good specimens, but tho owes" wero only fair, all suffering from the prevailing wet weather. The ewo hoggets were the best class in the section, and an exceptionally good lot. Tho crossbreds were a fairly cootl lot. while the Shropshires, though they did not excite much competition,, were well bred sheep. The following is the prize-list:— HORSES. Dbat/ghts.
