PREFERENTIAL TRADE.
ABOLITION EXPECTED. CAPETOWN, August 30. . (Reoeived Aug. 31, at 5.5 p.m.) The Preferential Tariff in favour of Britain is in jeopardy, and is likely to be scrapped. The Cnstoms authorities complain that quantities of Continental goods are smuggled in as British. The Hon. Mr Burton, who is consulting the Imperial Government regarding the naval policy, hinted that preference would possibly be dropped. Tho Onsland proposes a large increase in the tariff oa. British goods to \pTovide funds for the navy on the erroneous assumption that half a njillion in robates on British goods will go into the pockets of the Home manufacturers. The fear is expressed in some circles that the Government will make the navy an excuse, for abolishing preference, and then discover that the extra Customs revenue must be devoted to land defence or other local purposes.
