OFFICERS' SIGHT TESTS.
Mr Buxton told tiho Houee of Commons on July 16 that he did not thihk fcheto waa "much of a grievance" in regard to the colour test Still, ho is examining the subject further (says the London Shipping Gazette). As regards form vision, he is carefully examining the proposals of his Royal Society Committee to see whether they are excessive, and, if they are, "wo shall not hesitate to reduce them." All this suggests that the Board of Trade is not now very far from grace. The, pressure exercised by shipowners and shipmasters is telling, and we need say no more than that the department has only to thank itself - and tho Royal Society for getting into the present impasse, In the* circumstances wo note without comment the fact that a President of the Board of Trade now admits that the wool test has its " idiosyncraciea," and hints that the Admiralty has a very poor lantern compared with "ours." Mr Buxton assures us that the court may order a practical test, and that is "a considerable safeguard." Tho best safeguard is a sensiblo ...and practical test at tho outset.
