MINING.

At the 400 ft level of the. Old Hauraki mine, Coromandel, the footwall cross-cut was in 201 ft last week. The country was harder, but showed signs of improvement. Tho winze on the new reef was down lift. At tho seaward-end of the level driving was commenced on what was probably the Black reef in the Union Beach 'section. It was up to Bin in width At tho intermediate level in the Waitangi mine the drivo on No. 1 leader is in 31ft from the cross-cut. When breaking down some nice dabs of goM were seen, and about 31b of picked stone wa6 selected. In No. 3 stope, No. 2 leader, when broken down, showed dabs of free gold and telluride, and a few pounds of picked stone was secured. _ No. 4 Beach level is in 17ft from the main drive. The reef is split up into ribs of quartz, and there is a good deal of break formation mixed with the reef. Tho No. 4, rise at the Watchman mine, Thames, was advanced 10ft last week, making a total of 39ft from the floor of the No. Ia level. The reef for tho last 10ft showed a decided improvement in size, 'and measured about 4ft wide. It continued to show strong sulphides, which at times measured 12in wide on the hanging wall, with other 6eams, varying from lin to 4in, distributed through tho reef. Shooting up to the back of the Sunbeam level to the required- height had been completed up to the first timbers, and higher' sets were being replaced. 'DREDGING RETURNS. Oz. dwt gr. Thero have been no material changes in the Talsman mine at Karangahake since your representative's last visit. .The most interesting of the development works in progress is the advancement of tho main south drive through the Dubbo section of the property at No. 14 level. Some 50ft to 60ft back from the present face the pay values cut out, and the reef has become smaller, but the last round of holes tired shows more quartz with a nice-looking band of sulphide oro rom 10m to 12in wido on

the hanging wall portion. It thus eccmn probable that the pay values arc coming in again, but further development will be necessary before anything definite can bo said on this-point. The south face is still about 100 ft Uorth of. where the second run of values cornea in on the Dubbo section at No. 13 level. With a viewto improving: the ventilation at the bottom level a rise is being put in to connect with No 14 winze from No. 13. When this connection is effected other work will be put in hartd at No, 14 level, including u drive on the branch vein going off into the hanging wall country at the southern end of the. boring. This vein is about 2ft 6Ln wide, and carries oro.of fair grade. Crosscutting will also be proceeded .with from the o)d drive to see

whether the main section of lode is being followed, and later a winze will be sunk on

le reef immediately under the wigg, where

the ore body is from 12ft to 15ft in width and of good value. On the rich bonanza chute of ore preparations are bring made for heading out the second stope going south from No. 12 winze. In the Talisman section of the ground at No. 14- level but

little is being done at present.' The, rise to connect with No. 1 winze from No. 13 level, which weait down on the Maria reef about

14ft in values, and was thin stopped owing totheprcsenoe of water, lias holed through, but has rot shown what has happened to the ore body. In the winze the reef is lying rather flat, and appears tq bo going away into the hanging wall. work will bo prosecuted .here. At ; '' No. 13 level the south drive is still in progress 'and' now about under the point where driving south was discontinued at No. 11 level. Latterly

the reef has been smaller, and so far nothine; of oommcrcial value has been met

with, but us the encasing country is still of the right description, and the face gives indication of a change, driving will be continued. Whether this change is going to be attended iriih an improvement in the lode cannot yet! be eaid. The crosscut (No, 7) from the west branch of the reef where

the value Rave out with the intrusion' of a fissure on the, hanging wall side has disclosed nothing fresh. As the necessary distance has been driven, and the country now being penetrated is not favourable, driving will shortly be discontinued. In the stopo of the ' northern end of the first run of values in the Dubbo section a, strong body of ore lying very flat is showing. Usually whore the lodes assume a flat underlie the ore is lowgrade, but i;i this particular case, the reef is carrying very good vahtes. It is at present being followed north with the object of ascertaining what has occurred, as at this point overhead (No. 12) a level development disclosed practically no values. The drive to cut the west vein sonic distance north of No. 4 crosscut has intersected the ore body,.which id low-grade. As the face is in close proximity, to one of the main fatilte, it is .possible that this lias some influence as far as values are concerned, and the drive will therefore be carried beyond the fault to soa if any change takes place. The pump installed in the chamber below the level at the Talisman shaft is now in commission, and a s this is capable of lifting quite double the normal flow of water dealt with, in the mine the sinking pumps have been withdrawn from No. 12 winze, and the whole of the water is being dealt with by the new pump. The unwatering of the Woodstock shaft has been resumed, and in the absence of interruptions the shaft should be dry about the end of the coming week. The einkinß on the shaft will then be put in hand. When the chamber has lwen excavated and the pump workings installed driving both north and south will be commenced. Going north, the Maria reef

should be cut in about 80ft of driving, and the intention is to drive on l.iie course of tho lode. Coming south the drive will also follow tho course of ihn reef provided anything of value is met with. CROWN MINES. [Fbom Quit Own Correspondent,! i ■ WAIIII, July 26. Development works in tho (loop areas of the Crown mines at Karangahake arc now being pushed forward, but so far nothing of importance has been met with. At the No, 3 D level the crosscut from tho Welcome reef to intercept the Crown lode recently encountered the ore body at n distance of 4440 ft in. The lodo is now bcin« followed north from the crosscut and although the ore is not of good grade it, is being saved for treatment. Tho workings are about 200 ft vertical below the Waitawhnta level, above which the lode, though patchy, carried more or less gold 'for u considerable distance. About live years ago a crosscut was thrown out east from the No. 5 level 200 ft further down lo intercept tin same reef which came lo hand after driving about 700 ft from the Welcome. Nothing fur.hei was then done on the icdo, but work has now boon resumed arid the drive is following tho reef north. The ore body is somewhat mixed up and of 'low grade. In the Ilauraki section iformerly known as the Talisman ecction). where Ihc block of ore on the Maria reef was opened up from No. 4 level some months ago, the stopi.ng of tho reef over the back of the level is in progress. Rises on the lode arc also being put tip from No. 5 to No. 4 level, and from No. 6 to No. 3 level. The reef averages about 4ft in width, and the ore being broken out is payable. '
