• COST OF CONSTRUCTION. DAY LABOUR- v. CONTRACT. Presa Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, July 26. A return compiled by the Chief Engineer of Railways shows that 404 miles of railway were constructed under the contract system at a cost of £4309 per mile, whereas 765 miles built by day labour cost only £3321 per mile. These figures are being used by Mr Griffiths in support of his contention that day labour is cheaper.
