TOTALISATOR PERMITS.

TWO PRIVATE BILLS.

(From Our Ow.v Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, July 23.

Two private Bills have already been circulated dealing with totalisator permits, in the direction of increasing the number of days of racing^ Mr G. Hunter is responsible for a Bill to provide for 40 one-day totalisaor licenses for country districts. This Bill was oil the order-paper for to-day, but a stonewall, was entered upon to prevent it from coming up.

Another measure proposed is by Mr T. M. Wilford. This provides that instead of a maximum number of 2SO -totalisator permits being granted in a year, tho issue of such licenses shall be so regulated that the licenses issued in any one year will, as far as can be arranged, be available upon not more than *250 specific days of that year. The effect of this will be to allow racing upon 250 days without limiting the number of meetings. At uresont 250 days of racing are allowed, but if ten clubs choose tho same day, that counts as ten days. It is provided further that in allotting extra licenses preference shall be given to country racing clubs and trotting clubs whose licenses were not renewed, or whoso days of racing were reduced in accordance with the report of the Racing Commission. Thereafter, limit clubs may receive licenses, but not more than ten per year.
