HAWERA, July 21. Three Territorials were to-day lined £5 for failure to render personal service, and one was deprived of his civil rights for five years. WELLINGTON, July 21. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Committee to-day the local manager of a wholesale import firm wrote complaining of the frequency of cargopillaging on the wharf or in the goods shed. He stated that he had recovered £30 from shipping companies and the railways for such losses in six months, and pointed out that the practice was bad for the morals of the men in the store. The matter was referred to the transport subcommittee to investigate and report. In reply to a complaint of Timaru merchants that the steam service to Auckland was not frequent enough and that therefore orders for early went to Lyttelton, the Union Steam Ship Company promised to arrange an extra steamer monthly.

A number of the unemployed last week waited on the Mayor who, in consequence, invited communications from persons able to supply work. As a result work has been found for 15 married men.

The Timaru High School Board to-day decided to try to raise a loan to make additions to the boys' boarding-house, a number of applications for accommodation having had to be declined. An information was laid to-day against Walter Shaw, a bankrupt solicitor, on a charge of misusing the trust funds of C. Hall. The amount involved is about £900. The case will probably be heard nest Monday.
