DOMINION RIFLE ASSOCIATION

TRENTHAM MEETING. (Per United Peess Association:) TRENTHAM, March 6. , Tho last two of the C! series of matches preceding the King's Prize, which will take placo at 3 o'clook to-morrow, were fired off to-day in weather somewhat similar to that of tho previous day, there lieini? short periods of calm and longer periods of puffy breezes, which brought about some remarkable shooting in both matchcs. While some outsiders as well as veteran shots mode excellent scoring, several " cracks" entirely failed to koep up to their standard, and a large percentage of cards showed marksmanship below tho normal. As is usual when approaching stages of these competitions, there were many changcs in tho positions of, tho leading competitors.

Most, peculiar of'all was the case of Drumir.ond, of Westport, who, when shooting was finished Inst night, was up among tho first 10. He fired to day hi the Hawke s Bay and Taranaki matchcs at 900 yds and 1000 yds respectively, bat failed to find the tergoi with a single one of his 22 shots. It subsequently • proved that Drummond's riiie barrel had stripped. Then there was the oase of Captain Potter, of

Auckland. His shooting finished up last ni,ght with a dear lead of 10 points, but could only total 24 and 31 to-day, so that whero he had started to-day's shootmg with a clear lead of 10 points he finished up 19 points behind tho leading (that of James). In the Hawke's Bay match Frank (Christchurch) puc on a possible, but could only register 35 in the ensuing mafcoh at 1000 yds. Marenzi, with 54 at each range, shot into', second position, and M'Murray,'shooting consistently, i 6 aiow tieing with Loveday, lust year's champion, for third place. Tho surprise of the v 1000 yds contest was tho shooting of Sutherland, the Goodwood tyro, \\lho registered the possible, a very fine performance, especially under such bad shooting conditions as existed at the time he was on the mound. He scored 6 points moro tbicn any other competitor in the match. Marshall's score of 48 in the Hawke's Bay match was also a meritorious one. In this match Guy. (Kaponga). only scored 2, am) afterwards had fixed his sight for 800yda instead of 900 yds. The association again reaped a good harvest of challenge fialicrowns. So far there have been 440 cliallenges, resulting in a revenue of £55.

The following aro tho 50 to fire for the King's Prize to-morrow James (Okawa) 468. Marenzi (Kaitawa) .461, M'Murray (To Awamutu) 459, L. Loveday (Woodville) 459, Halishaw (Christchurch) 456, A. The Rifle Association's statistical officers had a very busy day, quite a large number of aggregates having to be worked out, a3 well as the results' of the Hawko's Bay, Taranaki, aJirl Teams Matches. Captain Bolton and his capable assistants proved quite equal to the task, and all the results were pitted with praiseworthy celerity. The Champion Teams Match was fired during the afternoon. With one tfiiot to go Christchurch were two points behind Suburbs, but Sandford. who is always reckoned an ideal "team sliot" proved equal to the occasion and rang on. a bull'sv-eye. The best score in the match was 97,' by James (Okawa). Opaki A were successful in winning both the shield and the GUI') presented by. tho C.A.C. Company for aggregates connected with Bolt matches, winning both by substantial margins. Of those to shoot in the final 50 James. Potter, M'lntcsh, Cuthbertson, Milroy, Roots.
