SCHOOL CONCERT AT HIGHCLIFF.

A very successful school concert was held in Highcliff Hall 011 Friday of last week. The chairman (Mr Fairbairn), in opening tho proceedings, briefly explained that the purpose of the conoert was to increase the school building fund'. The programme submitted was of a varied nature, and met with hearty .-.pproval. Almost every item claimed a vociferous encore, and on each occasion a ready response was made. A special attraction was the appearance of Mies Daisy Hall, who is tho possessor of a fine soprano voice. Messrs Louis, Bcnfell, ar.d Raynbird provided much amusement by their oomic selections, and Mr S. Gilmour, with his violin, roused the audicnoe to enthusiasm. Miss Ethel Craigie, the accomfor the evening, displayed considerable ability at this important work, and contributed in addition a much appreciated solo. The following also contributed items: Mr F. Hall (son"-), Mr G. Challis (recitation), Messrs Rutherford (3) and Morrison (quartet), Mies M. Rutherford (song), Mr Pollock (song), Mr and Miss Hall (duet), Master D. M'Kenzie (Irish jisr), Mr F.. Hellyer (song).

• At the conclusion of the programme Mr Rutherford (the head master) made a few remarks on the work done in the school garden, where potato experiments had been carried' out. The results had proved interesting and very satisfactory, and the school intended to exhibit potatoes at the forthcoming Winter Show.

A vegetable show and sale were held ill, conjunction with tho concert, and proved very successful. The competition for the six heaviest potatoes wa6 won by T. Cowie, and for tho twelve best potatoes suited for table uso by Evelyn Henderson. The decisions of Mr Duckworth, who acted as judge, gave, the greatest satisfaction. A buttonhole competition for tho school children was also held This created much interest, and tho artistic taste displayed by the children was the subject of approving comment. The first prizo was won by Ada Mathieson, iand tho second by Mary Cowie. Supper was afterwards handed round. Mr S. 6ilmour meanwhile playing popular tunes on the bagpipes. A dance was hold later. Mr R. Black acting as M.C., a-nd Messrs* Rutherford brothers, assisted by Mr Louis and Miss Mathieson, supplying the music.
