At a meeting of the board of directors of the Union Steam Ship Company yesterday Mr C. W. Rattray was appointed a director to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr J. M. Ritchie. A Wellington Press Association message 6tates that the following appointments have been made by the directors of the Bank of New Zealand:—Mr A. P. Green (Dunedin) will succeed Mr Kano as manager at Wellington; and Mr Alexander Morris, at present acting manager at Dunedin, has been appointed manager, at Dunedin.
The death took place on Wednesday (says a Press Association message) of one o! the oldest horsemen in New Zealand, Mr James Wattie. Deceased was about 55 yeans of age, and in his younger days was one of the best riders in the country. He had wins to his credit in nearly all the big classical events connected with the New Zealand turf, including the victory in the first Auckland Cup ever run. Deceased, up to the time of his death, had been associated with tho stables of Mr George Absolum, at Ellerslie.
The Presbytery of Christcluirch met at Sefton on Wednesday (says the Press), when a call from Kaiapoi in favour of the Rev. A. Laish'.ey, of Bluff, was kid on the table. The call, which was signed by 48 members and 41 adherents, was sustained, and, if accepted, the induction of Mr Laishley will take place at Kaiapoi on February 7,
