OTAGO ROWING ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL REGATTA,

llio eighteenth annual regatta of tho Otago Hotting Association was held at lort Chalmers yesterday in jwr-fect woathor, and (his and an intoreting" and varied programme might have bean expected to attract a larger attendance than was present A gentle north-east wind woe b.owing, which just caused a ripple on the water and no more. Tho tklo was on the ebb up till 3.20 p.m., and did not appear >to seriously affect the boats. The courso for tho Intorprovincial Fours was over two miles of water, and tho distance for tho other rowing , , events was one mile, fho Union Steam Ship Company had kindly ooneontod to the s.s. Maura boing utilised as a flagship, and Messrs Coleman Bros, had boon equally gonorous in lending their motor launch Vanguard for the umpire to fcMow the rawß in. Several visitors from a distance wero present, among them boing Mr J. Dudley, representing t-hG Wellington Rowing Association), Mr R. Gilmour (president of the Southland Rowing Association), and Mr E. H. Clark, M.P. Conspicuous among these taking an active part in the regatta were.tho president (M-r W.J. Wikon) and Messrs J. W. Shankland, H. D. Brewer, J. E. Galbraith, (vice-presidents). The judges wero Messrs H. 1). BreWor, M. Solomon, J. W. Shankland, and J. E. Gal. braith; the umpire and timekeeper Mr M. H. Priest; and tho starter Mr F. W. Mitchell. The Yacht Raco was principally controlled by Messrs 11. E. Moller and C. G. Smith, but thero was a host of willing helpers for both tho rowing arid sailing races. A word of thanks is due to the press steward (Mr W. T. Brailey), who was courteous and attentive throughout. That was, 'however, tho experience .with regard to all tho regatta officials, who 'were always ready to supply any information required. Following are the results of the various events: — INTERPROVINCIAL FOURS, Otago v. Southland (Edtmond Challenge Shield). Southland-D. G. West (stroke), B; John-

son, H. Bradshaw, T. West, W. Finncrty (cox) < 1 A. E. Stevens (stroke), J. R. Kerr, H. Paton, R. Black, L. Eaeton (cox) ... 2 Otago .was represented by tho Otago ■ Club's senior four &nd Southland by the Awarua orew. Otago had' tho outside position, near tho starter (Mr F. Mitchell), who got his men away with a good start. Otago struck tho water first, gaining a slight advantage over their opponents. Tho crews rowed together for the first quarter-mile, Southland striking 40 to the minute and Otago 38. After about a third of a mile had been gone Southland Wan to forge ahead, and at the black buoy had a 'cngth lead. Southland were than striking 38 to Otago's 36. From thence on the race • developed into a procession, Southland keeping up 38 to the minute till near th-i finish, while Otago wero rowing 34. Pasing tho powder magazine Southland were four lengths ahead. Tho Otago crew steered a rather erratio courso approaching the wharf, probably due to the tide, which ako caused Southland to roLl considerably for a few strokes. At the middle distance the Port crew had established a good lead, Otago and Invercargill Railway lying together, three lengths back. Coming into tho basin Port maintained their lead, and a close finish was promised between Itivcrcargill Railway and Otago until tho former stopped, leaving Otago to paddle into second place. D.A.B.C. stopped after completing throequarters of the course. Won by threo lengths. Time, 9min 58sec.

The crews wcro bunched well together until abaut midway, when Queen's Drive established a slight load, which they succeeded in maintaining to the finish, winning by about tTiree-quartcrs o{ a length. Coming into the biisin North End and Oamaru Boating Club collided, forcing botli to stop. InvercargiU Rowing Club wcro a poor third, about, six lengths behind D.A.B.C. Time, Bmin 47scc.

An even contest until reaching tho basin, when Sam nor R.C I , esiiMishpd a. slight lead, with Port Chalmers R.C. second and Otago R.C. third. When nearing homo the Tort Chalmers crew put up a great effort, and succeeded in catching tho Sunnier crow, and getting homo by littlo less than a length. Otago were a poor third, some lengths behind. Time, lOmin 4sec.

At, tho halfway Invcrcargill Railway had a slight load, with Port Chalmers'lying second and Invorcangill No. 1 third. This IMsition was maintained until the finish, Inverca-rgill Railway winning by a length. Invercargill were a poor third. Time Bmin 9sec.

Ford (bow). The Invorcargill Railway boat, was in front boforo any great distance had been traversed, with tho D.A.B.C. next, and North Btvd ploso up. The race wan practically over fiome time before tho finishing point was reached as far as first place was concerned, and the Invercargill Railway finally won by three lengths from the D.A.8.C.,' North End two lengths away third. Time, 9min 2seo.

Otago No. 2 did not finish, and a fairly close race resulted botweon Awania B.C. No. 1 and No. 2 and Invcrcargill Railway. Entering the basin, Awarua No. 1 .had a slight lead, whioli they maintained till the finish, a Iceen struggle for third place between Awarua No. 2 and Invercargill resulting in favour of the latter.

From a good start tho Matua was first to move, closely followed! by tho Eileen, tho other boats being bunched On the boat down to the lower buoy the lorangi assumed the lend, wHlj tile Matua at her heels. The lorangi rounded the marked buoy of! Pulling Point two minutes mid a-haJf ahead of the Matua, which was a similar time ahead of the Waimana. In til© rim homo tho Waimana gained on the Matua, but the lorangi increased her lead, and finished first, the Ma.aa second, and the Waimana third. The Result railed a good race, and gained first place on her handicap.

SWIMMING RACE. About 100 yds. T. J. Daweon, 2scc 1 E. J. Dawson, «;rateh 2 F. C. Johns, llsec 3 H. James 9sec, IP. B. Fcotc 12scc, and N. B. Edwards 15sec also competed. T. J. Dawfon won by about .two yards. No time was taken.
