SUGGESTED COURSE OF STUDY,

CHRISTCIIURCH, January 27.

A suggested courso of study in preparation for journalism was contained in a report presented by the Authors and Periods Committee to tho University Senate to-day.

The' committee recommended :—

1. That a course of study in preparation for journalism be established, and that a diploma be granted on the examination in the course prescribed.

2. That the following bo the course prescribed :—I, English language and litera

iure, as for a B.A. pass; 11, general history, as for a B.A. pass; 111, economics, as for a B.A. pass; IV, constitutional history, as for a B.A. pass; V, geography, os for Bachelor of Commerce; VI, statistical method, as for Bachelor of Commerce; VII, psyoholcgy and logic, as for a B.A. pass; VIII, a paper on the practical work Df. journaiKsm, the meaning oi "news," Jho respective value of facts as "news," reporting, writing of heads and titles, paragraphing and summaries, the economy of words, interviews, preparation of copy, proof reading, the uses of works of reference, dictionaries, atlases, encyclopedia handbooks and year books of history and statistics, quotations, civic, the proper application of a knowledge of history, economics, and political science to contemporary public affairs, the relations of a newspaper to the public, comparison of the methods and styles of representative newspapers ' and journals, advertising, general acquaintance with the mechanical processes ol printing books and newspapers, the general organisation of a newspaper office' (note, a candidate for this diploma will be required to forward to the registrar a certificate from a lecturer on this practical division of the subject that ho has had practice for not less than one year in a newspaper office).
