N.Z. BOWLING ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the council of the New Zealand Bowling Association was held in Mr J. M. Gallaway's office last evening. Thoro were present—Messrs J. M. Gallaway (president), J', H. 'Hor.cook, 0. Balk, James Taylor, and J. J. Marlow. The Dunedin, Centre forwarded a return' showing that,there were 1121 members attached to the affiliated clubs, producing a total levy of £14 0s 3d.—Received.

A remit from the Dunedin Centre to the effect that the constitution of the council ho altered to provide that in the case of election of members to tho council tho actual votes of delegates for and against be counted was referred to a committer consisting of 'the chairman and Messrs Tay--lor and Balk for consideration, and report to next meeting. The 6eoretary reported that all tho centres favoured the proposal, excepting Christchuroh.

The Southland Centre forwarded an appeal for assistance towards a fund in aid of the widow and family of the late J. L. Ridland, aone-timoprominent Southland bowlev. —The council regretted that, owing to the fact that it had been decided to levy on affiliated clubs merely to the extent of prdr yiding necessary -working expensos,' it was impossible to vote any Sum in aid of the fund referred to.

The Scorntary of the Christchurch Centre reported that at the mooting of the centre held on April 14 alette was read from Mr F. A. Saxton resigning his position as' secretary owing to his approaching departure for Auckland. The resignation had been accepted with regret.—The council passed the following resolution in- reference to Mr Saxlon's resignation:—" That this council desires-to place on record its appreciation of the good work done for bowling - under the. New Zealand Bowling Association by Mr F. A. Saxton, and wishes him all prosperity in his new career. ' '■■ . ■■• .•;■ \ . . BOWL-TESTING.

Following on tho circular (already published) forwarded,by the council to the varwiH centres - suggesting certain amendments in the rules relating to the system of bowl-testing, and asking for expressions of opinion, replies were received firom the Duniviin, Christchurch, 'Oamaru, and Southland !Vitr« Tlw recommendations from the Diinsdirt Centre have already been published, Tho recommendations from tho Christchurch Centre are ns follow:— 1. N« bowl shall be played which exceeds 16i- inches in circumference, or more than 3Mb in weight, or which has a less bias tlian; the standard bowl adopted by the association. ...

,2. No bowl shall be allowed to bo played in any tournament or interclub match which has not 'been tested, approved, and stamped by this association as pos-essitig a bias at least equal to that of the standard bowl of tho association; or any other stamp accepted by the association.' * 3. The use of bowls that have been tampered with or altered in any way after they have been tested and approved, •is prohibited in all matches and under the auspices, of this association. 4. Any competitor objecting to the running of a.bowl or bowls in a tournament shall lodge a fee of 10s with the secretary of the tournament to cover the expenses of rotesting tlie bowl or bowls, which sum shall bo returned to him if his objection bo. 'sustained. In that case, the party whose bowls do not pass the test shail Ibe* disqualified, and the match awarded to the objector. The secretary of the tournament shall recover the same fee from the owner of the bowl or bowls beforo they are returned to liim. • Tho bowl or bowls objected to shall, at tho conclusion of the game, be taken possession of by tho secretary of the tournament, who shall have tho same forthwith rctested by 'ihe association officer. P.S.—ln view of the above recommendations as regards tho prohibition of all untested bawls, tho sub-committee strongly urges that tho association bo requested to supply the centre with a standard bowl and.a testing machine. Tho Oamaru Centre wrote as follows:— Referring to yours dated 9th March, ro testing: The conditions contained therein, were road and discussed by our committee, prior to tho Easter tournament, and met with general approval, all fullv recognising that all bawls should he tested and' stamped by tho association's ofiicial, tester prior to being played, and your proposed conditions will govenr any. case that may arise. ' '

Tho cammunieation ' received from tho Southland Ccnt.ro was-as follows:—

Tho proposals of _ tho council on the question of bowl-trstinjr wore considered at the meeting of the centre, and .all were agreed to with tho exception of clause D, which this centre recommends should read:—"That when the finals are played, the executive shall reserve the. right, to have the bowls of the winners rotestcd by the prouer officer of the association."

Consideration of the .whole question of amending the rules governing bowl-test-ing was deferred until next meeting, in orderto allow of members of tho council perusing the various reports on the subject in the interval.

Mews John Jacques and Son (Limited), London, forwarded a communication in regard to bowl-testing, in which wcro contamed suggestions that they should be, appointed official bias-testers and stampers to the association, suoh appointment to ho made nn annual one, and U'at all bowls imported into New .Zealand stamped by them be exempt from any further toting or stamping fee unless at any time hereafter challenged in plav under the association regulations.—Received.
