SOUTHDOWN FREEZING WORKS.
(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 7. When the new men engaged by the Fanners' Freezing Company to replace the strikers appeared at the works this morning the strikers made an offer to resume under the old award, provided the company would at once consider their claims for increased' wages. The company declined to give any- promise, expressed or implied, but offered to take them back on the old terms. This they rejected, awl the butchers refused to go to work with the new men. The company therefore has closed the works. One hundred men are thrown idle. It is stated. that the union secretary recused to admit the new men to membership, although thev were qualified under the' rules of the union and the terms of the award.
The position in connection with the strike at '.he Southdown Freezing Works remains unaltered. The actual strikers are 14 gut-body hands and a dozen butchers, and they have thrown out 70 men belonging to other unions. Both sides are firm, and' the prospects of a settlement within tho next few days. do not appear very hopeful. •
