LONDON, December 7. Bishop Thornton is resigning the assistant-bishopric of Manchester.
The Right, Rev. Samuel Thornton is nov, 74 years of ago. He graduated at Oxford when 19 years of age, and for a time was engaged in educational work. He cnter«l the Church in 1858, and after holding a number of positions 'in England he came to Victor's, in 1875 to become first Bishop of B a Karat. He held that olfe until 1900 when ho returned to England, and tho following year lit! was C|i)pointed Vicar of Blackburn and' Assistant Bishop to tho Bishop of Manchester.
