GORE A. & P. SHOW,

CATTLE AND SHEEP JUDGED. (From Ovr Sfecul Rei-ohtee.) GCDecember 7. The committee of .he Core A. and I'. Association has every reason to bo satisfied with its twenty-ninth annual show, which was opeiied here to-day. The number of entries (874) is, with vhe exception of 1903, when tho total was 913, t.hc highest the society has ever known. The quality of the stock on exhibition is beyond cavil", and the show is, in a greater degree than has been the case with any other show held in Otago this year, thoroughly representative of the district in which it is held. Even the Otago metropolitan show need not lie excepted, for while the stock on show at Dunedin last month was on the whole of belter quality and more linely bred, there was a lamentable lack of competition in tho majority of the cattle and sheep classes, while many well-known breeds were not represented at. all. Bui an examination of the Gore schedule of entries proves that not only arc all parts of the broad and prosperous district between Tokomairiro ami Invorcargill worthily represented, but practically every class in the sheep and ralilo sections eontains from four lo 10 well-matched animals, involving close competition between the exhibits themselves, a tine sense of discrimination on the part of the judges, and keen interest on the part of the general public. Where other southern agricultural and pastoral associations appear to depend largely for the success of their shows .on the efforts made by a few well-known breeders, who come forward year after year with much tho same class' of stock, Gore l-cceives the hearty support of the general farming population, and has in consequence at its summer show stock which is of varying quality, but which consists of the type of animals that the farmers liavo found by experienoo is the most useful.

The judging of the sheep and cattle classes was concluded aa early as could be expected a the faoe of the keen competition that distinguished almost all the classes. In shorthorns, Mr D. Murray's bull which was first and champion at Glutha and second in Dunedin, and, as a two-year-old, was first at Clutha, Gore, : Dunedin, and Invorcargill, was first and champion, with Mr Baird's animal second. There were many who thought that a, handsome bull shown by Mr G. P. Johnston, of Waikaka Valley, might have been second instead of unplaced. There was some competition between the four aged oows in their class, and an animal which, according to appearances, should have como third was placed first. The judge's decision in tho two-year-old heifers' class was surprising, and particularly so in the yearling class, where a heifer shown by Mr Murray which had received honours from the Clutha and Dunedin judges was unplaood. The winning Ayrshire bull was poor behind, and- had not many qualities to recommend him to a breeder. Mr Stuart's exhibit showed better breeding, and had much to recommend him. Mi- J, Scott gained the championship -with a bull which breeders declared was not worthy of the honour. Tho yearlings were not by any means a bad class, whilo the COWB wore good and evidently useful animals and a very fair typo of the Avrehire breed. Mr F. E. Hellyer's Channeflsland cattle gained' all the prizes except one in the face of fair competition. There were many Guernseys forward, and it was evident tlmt the judge favoured them. In the CfOMteed division, animals with a strong dash oi rfiarthom carried oft' most of tho pnz«& Tho Lincoln sheep shown were tho property of Mr G. P. Johnston, a well-kjwwn Waikaka Valley breeder. There was a greater variety of animals in tub Border Leicester section, and the judge was given a • series of exceedingly difficult tasks in finding winners. Mr G, P. Johnston secured a championship with a ram which is a well-known prizc-tnlter. Second to him was placed an animal bred uy the N.Z. and A. Land Company, while Mr A. Murdoch's exhibit, which was second in Dunedin, as a four-tooth ram last year, and third in Gore, again secured a third certificate. A beast bred by Mr Jaine6 Ross, of Palmorston, of well-known prizetakers, shown by Mr G. P. Johnston, won in the 28 month ram class, and Mr Murdoch's exhibit, never previously shown, was second. Mr Johnston won in the. two-tooth class with a young animal by Wellington, tho well-known stud sheep, but in tho shorn rams and pair of rams classes first and second places went to' Messrs M'Kercher Bros., of Woodlands, who aro well known throughout Southland as very successful brcodere. .The champion ewo was aleo shown by Mr Johnston. She is a regular prizotaker at the Goro and Invercargill shows, and has never been beaten, The champion English Leiocstor ram was shown by Mr A. Murdoch. It was champion here last year, and was third in its class at the Dunedin show. Mr Murdoch won most of tho prizes in this section' with young animals which appeared -on a show ground for tho first timo, and aro full of promise. There was on exceedingly fine type of Romney Ma-reh sheep forward, and every class was distinguished by large entries and closo competition. Mr A. M'Kay, of Pomahaka, Messrs Ladhrook, and Mr M. J. Johnston, of Waikaka Valley, were tho most successful exhibitors, but prizes were on the whole very evenly distributed. Mr M'Kay won the championship with a, rain that made hra first appearanoe before a judge, and tho judge described him as an exceptionally fino specimen of the breed. Mr C. Gardner, a Thornbury farmer, took a number of prizes with ewes in this and in tho Downs section, and ho showed a ram of tho latter br;«d that gained a ciharnpion6hip. The crossbred® were a particularly strong section; and ono of the features of the show,_ and the display of dairy produce was in every respect satisfactory. Light and heavy horses, dogs, and pigswill bo judged to-morrow, and in practically every class numerous entries havo been receivod. Only fine weather is wantxsd to make this show one of the most successful ever beld by the Gore Association.

J he Gore A. and P. Association's twentyninth summer show waj continued to-day m ideal weather. An unusually large li'.mber cl visitors arrived jn ihe town duriTr ■the day, and the attendance at the show was mtimated at 6000. Tlte actual takinss at the gate totalled £240, which is £20 better than last year. Public interest, naturallycentred in the nngs of horses which were during the day placed teforo the judges. Although some half a dozen judges were tept busy all day, evenness in quality in tlio animals shown, and' large entries, did not a.l low them to finish their work rapidlv, and it was after 5 o'clock before the Jaet occasions were given, while the competi-tions-raein,?, jumping, etc.- were not concluded unt.il an hour later. Onlv three aged entires were forward, and the'rod ticket went to the Edendale horse Sir Thornlev owned by Mr D. M'Donaid. This animal was; placed next to Baron Fyvie in his c\m at tire Dunedin paiwte this year, but haa not been shown sinoe last year. At Inveroargill ho w;s second to Lord Plunket, aiul first and champion there the year before. Mr R. Irving's well-known Biron iCanton and Mt Jam®! R-obertfon's King

Alexander came together in tho three-year-old class, Clinton having thon eight hrsts, four champions, and two reserve champions to his credit. Ho secured another first, and won comfortably in his class. Baron Clinton was |,wicc reserved champion this season to his sire Baron Fyvie. The entire- yearling class gave the judged a lot of trouble, and eventually the card went to a youngster of Duncniisf stock never befoio shown, and owned by Mr R. Carson, Wyndhmn. One of Sir Thoinleys breed, shown by -Mr J. Scott, who was first in lii.s class at Wyndham, was second, and Balfour and Waikaka. horses respectively third and fourth. Two other competitors of tho Thornley slock, shown by :Mr 1). Milligan, of Crookston, wore unplaced. A two-year-old gelding by Hector Macdonald, shown by Mr (!. Morrison for tho first time won. Thornley and R. Muir's winning two-year-old colt, ivhich by the way L> a Moagiel horse, nnd was second in his daft, at (Jic Tokoiu;iiriro show, were brought together to compcto for the championship. The coveted ribbon ' "'us given, with little hesitation, to Mr Irving's horse. Mr ,1. Luwson, of M'Nab, was second_ to .Mr Muir's beast with a colt by Duncr&ig, never before shown. In the aged !,, :tre class two well-known animals were ..gether—Rosie O'Grady, owned by Mr J. liwiin, of Druimnond, and Aellie Uray, a somewhat elderly animal, with which W. Gray and Son, Waimatuku, liave for years been winning prizes. The judges gave her another red ticket, tho Drunimond exhibit going second. There was a nice ring of brood mares forward, and the prize went to another animal with a district reputation—namely, Mr R. Irving's Bell, which was first and champion at the Clutha show for three years. Prior to that she had not boon shown. Mr 15. Orchard's animal, placed second, won in another brood mare class. Mr Ewan's pair of dry mares—Rosic Newton nnfl her dam, Rosie O'Grady—were first in their class, but these two, with a two-year-old lilly by Abbott, took only second place in the mare with two of her progeny competition, in which Mr living's Enn, appearing with Baron Clinton as one of her progeny, took the red tickct. The judges deliberated long over this class, saying it would ba difficult to find a bolter riny of horses, but tho present* of the stallion in the Clinton combination gave it. enough strength to win. The three Drunimond mares, however, won against two of Irving's marcs as a group of three, and Mr Irving had again to be content with second place in a class in which groups of three young horses by one sire competed, his trio by Royal Derby giving first place to Mr W. J. Johnston's animals by Hector Macdonald. Throe other animals by tho latter sire, and shown by. Mr J. Waddcll, were third. The ihrce-year-old filly class was remarkable in two aspccts—first, bccausa it contained th> best quality, and eeoond, because the winner (Highland Mary) was adjudged champion of the inares of tlie draught, section. Sho beat in her class Mr Ewan's Rosie Newton, which was champion at Thornbury and Otaiitau, as well as Mr T. A. Fleming's Princess Maudo and a promising mare of Duticraig stock shown by Mr Caldwell. Highland Mary is by Hector Maodonald, out of Lady. Ranfurly. She was first in Invercargill as u yearling', and last year, as a two-year-old, won red tickets at Gore, Duncdin, and Invei'cargill. This year, however, when st<l to Diva»din,<fte was, strange to say, unplaced. She is a, remarkably wollmado and well-marked boast, and will take' a lot of beating. Tho fact that she was made champion before Rosie O'Grady, and particularly beforo Messrs Gray's Nelli© Gray, wos'an unexpected but not generally questioned decision. This three-year-old, the Waimataku and Drummond horees, and Messrs Thomson's mares, one of which I beat Nellie Gray in Dtmediir . are all exI pectcd to meet in Invcrca-rgilt next week, a.nd horse breedehs are looking forward with interest to the decisions that will be given. Mr W. Waddell's two-year-old filly by Weston Lad, which was second as a yearling hero last year, but was unplaced at Wyndham a few days ago, won in her class, beating \Y. Irving's lady Stewart, which was second at tho Taieri and first at Duncdin a.nd Oamaru this yoa-r, and last year as a yearling won rod tickets at Gore and Tapanui. Mr Ewan's exhibit, by Abbott out of Rosio O'Grady, which was second at both Thornbury and Otautau, and as a yearling gained ai first and second, was unplaced in this okss. Mr Irving, however, scored a win in the pair of two-year-old fillies or geldings class, with Mr W. J. Johnston second and Mr Waddoll unplaced. There was little or no competition in thoroughbreds. Mr Mlntosh's Malakoft was champion entire, and Mr T. S. Kavanagh's mare, by Capnonball, wag champion of' the female division. There was excellent 'competition in' all the pony daises. Mr I'. Ryder, a. weJI-known Invercargill exhibitor, carried off the l prizo in every claa; in which ho was entered. The hackney section was in every respect satisfactory so far as working classes were concerned, but the only carriage stallion fonvard was Messrs Jones and Clo.'s The King, and Mr J. Mnir'e hackney stallionBellmont Royal was by itself in its cjass. In the weight-carrying harness horse classes, Mr Aoton Adams, of Heriot, who is a well-known prize-taker at'almost all Ota-go shows, added further to the excellent reputation enjoyed by his horees by carrying off the lion's share of prizes. Pigs were not, well represented, but there were large entries and close and interesting competitions in all the dog classes.

Dnmojrr Horses. Judges: Messrs W. Blakie (Ky&l Bush) and H. Saunders (Waimate), horses; and Messrs D. Clark (Drummond) and Tlios. Gnwn (Mosgicl), mares.
