LAWN TENNIS.

A GRADE. KAITOIfA V, OTAQO. This match was played on tho Otago Club'a Counts. The wind was a little. troubl«6mo during the afternoon, but it was moderate as compared with what it was- elsewhere. Afl was expected, the result was close, orriy four games separating the two teams at the end of the day's, play, I Kaituna securing a win by that margin. Tho play gettoratly was in a.nd out. For instance, Braithwaite played an exceptionally poor double with Bray, yet in his Single against Bundle he quite surpassed himself, driving harder than usual and passing with great accuracy and deadly effect. Bundle, on the other hand, played mostly on tlte defensive, and, on the whole, was qnite_ outclassed. Ewen played brilliantly. Iris driving and smashing being very tefimg. In his Combined with Miss Hisiop, however, he coirfd not get going, and lost it, 9-4. Bray was quite good in the Combined, and in his Sing.lo had the set at his mercy, but by faulty, ei-rat-ic pray allowed Ewen to creep up. Harraway and Jones both played well, Unfortanatofy, (he former in his Combined had very little to do, and his partner was not equal to the hard work allotted to her. Harraway, with a safe iKirtner, is a. formidable combined player. atK i groat ; g j ue to Vt dkie for his generalship an, evading the veteran. Jonee won all his events for his club. Wilkie drives a beautiful ball to the off and volleys splendidly. Ho has a keen eye, and gels up some marvellous balls. Nieolson was playing much below form. One of the best Ladies' Doublos seen in ■Dunedin for dome years was that between •Misses Campbell and Ma«to and Misses Hisiop and Royse. It was expected that itho Ksituna ladies would' win this set easily, but they never had to work harder to win. M»? Royse's.play cadfe for eisecial Wnontion. She is usually a reckless hitter. r but on this occasion she drove well, and •with great accuracy, and her backhand .play was splendid. Naturally, Miss Murks was given Ithe lion's share to do, a.nd elie came through the ordeal well. The Otago .ladies studiously avoided Miss Campbell who was playing everything tliat eajne her way wit-h unerring exactitude. Misses Mac-' kail and Hislop put up a good light against Missw Lester and Davis, and were only lwa-ton in tlio lasi gume. Miss lister was very safe, everything being returned without any doubt. The match altogether was most interesting, as it usually is between these two clubs. Otago played without C. G. White, while Kaitnna might- have included Sinclair and Tomlinsoii.
