MELBOURNE, November 19.

_ An olKcer of tho Government Statistician's Department Mated before the Cable Committeo that there were 224 daily papers published in tho United Kingdom and 67 in Australia, giving an average per million of tho population of 5.04 for tho United Kingdom and of 15.82 for Australia. There were 2668 weeklies in tho United Kingdom and 774 in Australia, the averages per million being: United Kingdom 59.95, Australia 102.85. Tho committee has adjourned to Sydney, whero further evidenco will be taken.

In the Senate Mr J. C, Neild moved that he be discharged from further e«rvice on the Cablo Committee. This was agreed to.

He express dissatisfaction with the standing order vJhieh prohibits the publication of the evidence until it is reported to tho Senate. He also takes grave exception to an investigation into matters outside the scope laid down in tho commission, for which (hew is no justification for expending public money. He considers thai sufficient evidence has already been taken to prove; that no monopoly exists.
