Tho deepening of tho Suez Canal to 36ft is 'proceeding. The dredges are ' raising' 120,000 tons of stuff a month, and are working night and day.

The notes in circulation total £28,431,000; public deposits. £6,321,000; other deposits, £40,228,000; Government securities, £16,008,000; and other securities, £22,907,000.

The bank I'ate of discount is 5 per ml. ■

Short ,loans aro discounted -at 4 per cent';, and three months' bills as follows:—London, 4J per cent, j Paris, l\; Berlin, 4|.

Consols arc quoted at £82 10s.
