AMUSEMENTS

CHORAL SOCIETY'S CONCERT.

Ihe programme put Forward by tho Dunctun Choral .Society Inst evening was of a more varied description than usual, and was, for that' reason alone, most acceptable. Rut the performance itself was amongst, the l»st the society has given, and thaw wore therefore two good and substantial causes for congratulation. Tho soctoty bad evidently made a very laudableeffort to conic is near to (lerfcction—which is not easily attainable by either profes- ' siouols or amateurs-as th'o ability of (he performers permitted. While the'attendance was a good one, it was not. such as the Society is justified in looking for, nor what is deserved at tho hands of the publio towards such a society. Coming to tho performance, it was in many respects a moat praiseworthy one. It o|mncd with miscellaneous selections from Elijah and : the Creation, the soloists being Miss Violet- • Frnser and Mr -David Hulton. The chorus' > ' Thanks bo to God" was given with 1 a, very fair degree- of precision and good effect by tho choir, which was, however, not. €0 successful in "H 0 watched over Israel." "The heavens arc telling"— taken somewhat slowly, until approaching the brilliant finale, probably for the sake of strong contrast and increased effect—wa g one, of the best items of the evening. ' "Achieved 's the glorious work" was oomewhat of a tax oh the sopranos, and was not so evenly rendered as some of the other choruses. Mr Hutton gave an exceptionally fine rendering of "It is "' enough," if emphasis was oceasienaly wanting, and Miss Violet Frnser showed distinctly (hat she had made a careful and' intelligent study of "On mighty peirt.". It was her one solo, and in it sho achieved undeniable sucec«. "The seasons: spring*" ' formed tho .second part of the programme, :'< and here, with one or two exceptions, the ehoif Was not heard to tho same advantage as cariior in the evening. " Come gentle spring, ollierial mildness come," however, had all tho bright joyoiianess infused imV it that could be desired, and ranked with! tho best given. There is a . good deal of trio work for soprano, tenor, and bais, those parts being supplied by Hits Frances Grant, Madame Von Look, and Mr Hutton who generally acquitted themselves with distinction. Of solo work v lhere is ?. o ,t?! ucl .'' Mr H »H<"i's interpretation' of With joy the impatient husbandman" was only a partial success, bis rendering lacking somewhat in vigour.' It ia only fair to say, however, that the singer was placed at a disadvantage by the orchestra which did not study him as much as it • •night. In most other respects tho orchestra carried out its duties admirably . and was not nearly us obtrusive as 'it usually is. Mws Grant had but a very short piece of solo work in "Our fervent prayers are heard," but, with Madame Von Look and Mr Mutton, did good ««r vice in ihc trio parts. Taken as a whole the i concert was n. good one. for which the society deserves every credit.
