PETONE WORKSHOPS.
A MISCONCEPTION. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 11. The troubled state of mind of a number of old hands in ll;e Polone Workshops over the fusion of the .Manawatu staff with the Government employees seems to be based on a misconception. It lias been explained otlicially thai the Government, in its agreement- to purchase the Welling ton and Maiinwatu I'ailway, undertook to tak? over the staff and deal with it equitably. .Men who held a certain position under the company wore given the minimum phicc in a similar grade on the classification list. Though a man might be getting 12s per day when transferred, he would he placed oil Ihe list below the Government. men, even though they might not have- reached 12s per day—the maximum of that grade. Men are promoted to Ihe li'.:>:t class with due regard to their qualifications and order on the list, So iar as the man is concerned to whom exception was taken, the department states that iio is exceptionally woll qualified for the position he received at Peione.
