FRANCO-BRITISH EXHIBITION

SOME NEW ZEALAND TRIUMPHS. , staple indus™es Neglected. (F»oh Otra Own Correspondent.) LONDON, October. 15. j The official list of awards at the Franco- [ British Exhibition, which was published yesterday, is stated to l>c complete, but soveral classes in • which Now Zealanders are interested do not appear to have been judged. Now Zealanders generally will regret; that in several of our staple industries tho exhibits were not made sufficiently convincing lo secure first honours from or with the States which are our competitors. In vegetable food products five Australian States score the grand prize; New Zealand as a State h not there. In animal food products it is the same: In non-cdiblo agricultural products and appliances New Zealand takes the _ diploma of honour, while the grand prize goes to several of our rivals. Tho three' highest class prizes for preserved meats go to .our rivals, New Zealand companies lagging wearily in the fourth and fifth classes.. In rope we arc relegated to the foin-lh class, and in leather and skin to the thind. ' In woollen however; three- New Zealand companies stand conspicuous in the grand prize list. In workers'- dwellings we are defeated by the Co-operative .Tenants' Housing Council; in "Movements for tho welfare of the people" we are unheard of; but in "Provident institutions" the ■Government of New Zealand wins the grand prize. Nobody will believe that Now Zealand could not have beer placed alongside our strongest rivals in such classes as proserved meats. THE LIST. !
