THE LEGITIMATION ACT.
PROVISIONS EXEMPLIFIED. (Pek Uniteb Press Associatio!:.) AUCKLAND, October 28. The Legitimation Act of 1894 was availed of at the sittings of the Arbitration Court, to-day in a compensation case in .which a .Maori father made a claim in respect of a son who was bom prior to marriage according to European custom, although a marriage according to Native ideas had taken place. It is believed that this is the first lime this act has been made use of in public proceedings as far as .Maoris are concerned, and for that matter it is an act which i s very seldom used by pakehas resident in the Dominion, though there have been several' cases of persons coming from Australia to New Zea]and for tho purpose of legitimatizing their children. Clause 2 of the act provides, subject to certain restrictions, that any child horn before, marriage whose parents afterwards marry shall he deemed on registration to have been legitimatized by such marriage from birth.
