NEW TRADE OPENINGS.
< AUCKLAND'S APATHY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
AUCKLAND, July 31. Wellington is steadily capturing the trade along tho Main Trunk line. Although this sort of' warning has been sounded on numerous occasions in Auckland, tho Auckland merchant seems quite content to let things slide, and ho is not bothering himself much about it. A business man wlio has been travelling through tho King Country found the 'Wellington and Wanganui people pushing trade, and only Auckland seemed to be unrepresented. In one boarduig-houisc a. good way smith ho found 15 travellers from rations Wellington commercial houses, but not one from 'Auckland. The first Auckland traveller ho met was at Tamnnrumii, and found that it was not the custom of Auckland houses to send further. Tho enterprise of Wellington as compared with the lethargy of Auckland is going to reap a rich harvest for the capital, and already in the Waikato and in the Kawhia country the people are declaring their intention of trading with Wellington.
