(Pee United Press Association.)
_ CffIUSTCHUROH, July 31. Few applications for work are now beinjr received by the Labour Bureau. Arrangements liavo been made to send a dozen men to the ilidJand railway works next Tucsd-ay. or as soon as tho engineer in ohargo has advised that camp accommodation iB ready. The city surveyor, who found work on behalf of tho City Council for 40 men, stated that that aiurnbcr could not be continued after this week, and nino or 10 would finish on Saturday, The total number would be reduced gradually, as the amount votod by the council for the relief works decreased. A large proportion of tho men had proved themselves capable labourers, and somo of them would probably be transferred to suoh loan works as could bo conveniently taken in hand at once. The acute stage of the scarcity of work had passed away with the wet weather, and there, was over chance of men desiring work to got it outside tho council.
