LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE SOCIETY.

The fifth annual meeting of the Lan-. cashiro and Yorkshire Society of Otogo, held in the Trades Hall laet evening, was well attended. Mr. W. Taylor (president) occupied the chair, and explained that tho report would show that their society stood in a very satisfactory position. They were not in debt,' and their object in bringing young and old in touoh with ono another had been fully carried out. They had also fceeJi able to assist strangers from the Old Country or from other parts of the Dominion to find situations on arriving in Dunedin.—(Applause.) ' : The Secretary (Mi C. Frye) submitted the following annual report: — During the past year the society has held 11 basket socials, including the annual meeting. Two committee meetings and two picnics were held during the summer months. The meetings have all beeu. well attended, and everything has gone on in an entirely satisfactory manner. The membership has also steadily, increased, and their financial position was good. During the early part of this year the secretary,! on behalf of the Besses o' th' Barn Bond, presented the society with a handsomely-framed laigc photographic picture of the members of the bandi and this was now one of tho features of their meeting room. At one c<f the recent meetings the presentation of an inscribed silver cako dish and 1 silver salver was made to the secretary and his wife, Mr and Mrs Frye, as a token of regard, and was greatly appreciated. Special mention and thanks are due to Mr G. Jackson for his musical services at the meetings. Thanks are also due to the junior members for their instrumental and musical items; also to Mr Ackroyd for tho use of his grounds at St. Leonards for tho society's two picnics. Tho report was unanimously adopted. •Tho following office-bearers wore elcotod for tho current year:—President, Mr J. 11. Ghappell; vice-presidents—Messrs W. Jackson and J. W. MayaJ'l; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. Frvc; Committee of ' Management—Mr and Mrs Taylor, Mr arid Mrs Lowe, Mr and. Mrs Elstub, Mr ami Mrs Madon, 'Mr and Mrs Ait-ken, Mr and Mrs Beasley, Mrs Bailey, Miss Soo'tt, and Mi Goodwin. The newly-elected president (Mr Chappell) took the chair, and thanked members for his election. Ho promised to do his best during his term of office to further the interests of the society. Votes of thanks were acoorded to tho retiring president, the members who had contributed musical items at their gatherings, and to tho ladies for providing refreshments. Air Taylor t(fcho retiring presiden thanked the members for their vote, and refon-ed to the great assistance ho had received from the members of his committee and their seoretary. A long donee programme was then gone through at tho close ,of the.business meeting, with Messrs W: Jackson and J. W. , Mayall aot.ihg as M.C.'s, and Mr Jackson, jim., presiding at the piano. Tho lady members o! the society unpacked baskets 1 of suitable rcfrcshmente during tho even- ( ing that wero characterised by North of England hospitality and good oooking. ' During the evening tho following items were rendered:—Songs—Miss Cran and Mrs Ai'tken. and Mr Paten ; dialect humorous reading, Mr C. Fryer; reoitation, Miss Simpson; musical item, tho Frye family.
