BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINGS.

NORTH-EAST VALLEY. A special meeting of the North-East Valley Borough Council was held last evening for the purpose of fixing the general and special rate for Ihe ensuing year. The Mayor (Mr 1. Owen) occupied the chair, and there were present- Councillors Robertson, Macandre-w, Mowat, Rotting, Harvey, Campbell, and Evans. Or Harvey moved-''That the council levy a general rale of 3i}d in the pound upon the unimproved value, of all rateable property, and that the annually recurring special rato of Gd in the pound upon the capital values of all rateable properties be payable as heretofore." Cr Rotting seconded' the motion, which was carried by. 5 votes to 3. Cr Macandrew moved--''That, pursuant to tho provisions of sect-ions 98, 99, 100, and 101 of ' The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900,' and of all other powers enabling, this council levy the annually recurring separate rate of Jdiin the ;poiind equally on all the capital values of all the rateable properties within the township of Glenroy, and as appearing upon the. valuation list for the time being in force in the borough, such rate to bo for the year commencing April 1, 1908, and ending March 31, 1909." C'r Harvey seconded, and the motion was carried unanimously. On the motion of Cr Betting, seconded by Cr Harvey, it was agreed that the council levy for tlie year commencing April 1, 1908, and ending March 31,: 1909, a general rate of 4Jd in the pound on the annua! values of all rateable properties not being situated in the outer drainage area. WEST HARBOUR. A special meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last night for the purpose of making a general rate of ljd in the pound on the unimproved valua..tion; also to consider the appointment of an extra surfaceman. The members present were tho Mayor (Mr ,H. E. Holier), Crs Blnekie. Duncan, Crawley. Jack, Crosland, and Whyfce. A formal motion making tho above rate was agreed to on the motion of Cr Crosland, seconded by Cr Crawley. Cr Duncan raised the question as to whether the proposed rate was not too high, and whether the special rate could not be reduced.— The Mayor pointed out that the rate had ' been struck, and discussion on tho question ; was too late. Cr Whyte (chairman of the Works Committee) presented a report recommending that the services of the ranger be dispensed with, thereby saving £25 per year, J and that an oxtra surfaceman for the lower ward be appointed' for six months-C'r ' Crosland seconded the motion.—Cr Dunoan * said he thought the proposal should be ' referred to the Finance "Committee, and ' moved accordingly, but found no seconder. —The motion was carried.
