A gang who were smuggling tobacco into Spanish territory from the Portalegrc district (Portugal) at midnight met" a number of Portuguese guards.
During the fight some Spanish troops who were in pursuit of tho smugglers crossed the frontier, and were mistaken for a second gang,
A torriblo conflict ensued before the error was discovered.
The smugglers lied to the mountains, leaving several dead, including two women.
Several soldiers on both sides were killed and wounded.
