RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.

AUCKLAND, December 27. Sir J. G. Ward announces the following ohanges:—Mr J. Burnett, inspecting engineer, to bo chief engineer; Mr F. •W. Mac Lean, district engineer at Dunedin, to be inspecting engineer at Wellington; Mr H. Macandrew, district engineer at Christchurch, transferred to Dunedin; Mr C. H, Biss, district engineer at Wancanui, transferred to Cliristchurch; Mr F. J. Jones, district engineer at Wellington, transferred to Wanganui; Mr F. E. Widdop,, district engineer at Greymouth, transferred to Wellington; Mr C."M. • Benzoni, assistant engineer at Wellington, transferred to Greymouth. Mr Coom is to go on leave from .Tanuarv 1 to March 31, and on the latter date all the appointments take effect, Mr Burnett acting as chief engineer meanwhile.

A 6eaman on the scow Haere, known as Long, was drowned in the Karamea Itivcr H Christmas Eve.
