A CELESTIAL VISITOR.

Sin,—l am advised from the Wanganui Observatory that the comet, which during the middle of August appeared as a conspicuous object in tho eastern sky, will not ho visible to the unaided eye as an evening star. Our cclcstial visitor is now rapidly receding from the earth on the opposilo side of the sun from us, and by tho time the earth has travelled sufficiently • far for us to seo tho fugitive, it will have got lieyond our powers of unaided vision, but should be visible for somo time in telescopes of medium power. The best view of iho comet obtained at this station was on tho morning of August 13, at half-past 5 o'clock, when the head v?as equal in brightness to a two and a-half magnitude star, and the tail was just 15 degrees in length.—l am, etc., Oscar Bmjxdeu. The Manse, Becks, September 3.
