A ROYAL COMMISSION.
, Sin,—One .of the subjects of inquiry by Iho .-Royal Commission regarding the Nightcaps mine i<s the determination of the competency of tho Inspector of Mines and the efficiency of tlio inspection of the mine. One of the commissioners appointed by the Minister of Mines and Justice to conduct such inquiry is Mr H. J. IT, • Eliott, formerly Under-secretory for Mines. In the account of the. proceedings of this Royal Commission appearing in tho Otago Daily Times of September 4, tho Inspector of Mines (Mr E. R. Green) is reported to have stated. ' in reply to ,Mr A. Forbes, that, for upwards of six years prior to about, a year ago ho had worked under tha direction of 'Mr Eliott when that gentleman held the position as Under-secretory for Mines. Wo have now. therefore, tho edifying spectacle of Mr Eliott sitting' on a commission to investigate the actions of a man .when.working under his directions and control.—l am, • ctc.. R. E.
