AUCKLAND, v. SOUTHLAND. j DECISIVE WIN FOR AUCKLAND. (From Ouk Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, September 4. The intorprovinoial football match between Auckland and Southland was played hero this afternoon in splendid weather. The ganto.was uninteresting from a spectator's point of view, being chiefly confined to the forwards. The visitors won by 10 points to nil. The Auckland forwards, who averaged almost- a stone move than the local men, played with characteristic dash and outclassed their opponents in almost all departments. Southland got t-ho ball in most of the scrums, but their passing wa6 very poor, and invariably resulted in favour of Auckland, The Alickland backs rarely attempted to pass, but their lino kicking and tackling were of a very high order. The exhibition of kicking by the local backs was the worst seen hero for somo time, The main feature of the 'game was the splendid line-out worked tile Auckland forwards. Mr W. J. Wilson, of Dunedin, acted ae referee, and frequently penalised the Northerners for oil-side play and obstructing. - In the (Ir6t spell Magea kicked a, g;oal for Auckland from a free kick, this being the only score at- half-time. Midway through tho second spell Twiname secured, tho ball in a loose scramble, and potted a pretty goal. Auckland's next score was just on the call of time, Coote obtaining possession from a line-out, and scoring near the corner, no goal' resulting. Of tho Auckland backs, Twiname, .Murray, and Magec were the best, while of a very even lot of forwards Francis, Macjjuire, and. Hall were prominent, Reid, Broad, and Stead wcro the pick of tho Southland liacks. and Hamilton, Hanson, M'Neece, and Hughes showed out prominently' in tho forwards. Hamilton played a particularly fine game, and was the best forward on the ground. The following players have been pielf - to represent the Alhambra. Club in Iho benefit match to be played next Saturday: F. Williams, 1 R. Beiinet, Marston, Reid, M'Kewen, Ilarrhy, M'Dougall, Andrews, P. Williams, Nelson,. Mitchell, M'Kenzie, Flanagan, Morrison, ami Ilarridge. The abovo players, together'with emergencies, are requested lo meet at the Albany Street School, liall - at 7.30' to-night for training.'

A.S S O C I A T I O N. . Wednesday Fikal. Following upon last week's draw nnoihor attempt, was .made yesterdav to decide tho ownership of tho Charity Cup, when Southern A and Telegraph met at the Gardens before a. largo number of spectators. Telegraph, facing tho sun, kicked o!f uphill. From the jump play was keen, and Botting was called upon hvicc running to save against Tolegmnji rushes. Play here removed to tho other goal, and a short Southern ' attack, initiated by Botting. Macdonaid. and Rose, found 'Illingwortli quite capable of-keeping up his end. Another Telegraph rush, tested tho ingenuity of Dobbio and Ingram, but, aided by judicious "feeding", from the halves, the 'Southern forwards _ again" made Telegraph goal their objective, this time with' more -result..'Nightingale scoring a goal, which was made possible from a centre by P.OSS. On tho resumption of play Dobbio took an opportunity of lifting a high one into the goal. This shot was well fisted out, but Macdonaid was handy and made no mistake. /' This same player sen! ill some accurately-placed corner kicks, but nothing resulted therefrom, and the spell closed with Southern (ihead by two goals. On tho second spell Southern, unhindered by slope of 'ground, continued to press, but ihere seemed to be lack of cohesion, and O'Connor, Goodinanson, Clancy, and Illingworlh successfully prevented'any'further score. Telegraph liad various likely chances, but. for want of-a quick hard shot among their-forwards the Southern lead was unchallenged, and the Charity Cup goes to Southern, A. • ''Mearns," left full back for" Southern, ' plaved a very safe ganie, ami lie, with E. 'Rotting, bore Ihe brunt of the defence work, M'Neill and M'Kenzie\ might also be mentioned for Telegraph, As referee Mr M'Donald gavo 'satisfaction to i both teams.
