TKo Mayor of DuncVliri; Who has l«en here for the past day or two, leaves for ilio south this evening, and will arrive in Dunedin on Thursday or Friday night. Mr Loudon's business' here .has been mainly of a. private, nature,- but ho took' tho opportunity of seeing the Premier and tho Hon. J. A. Millar' on sevoral matters .of interest to tho corporation. With rofe'ronco to tho verandah on tho' Princes street frontago of the Post Office, Sir Joseph "Ward said that it was difficult to get .money for any works not of an absolutely urgent nature, but asked Uiat tho plans be left with him, and promised to .givo the matter 1 his best consideration.. As regards tho improvement of the approaohes .to the new Railway Station at the intcrseetipn of High, Castlo, andJ Stuart streets,, this '.matter' has been the subject of /correspondence '■ with tho Railway Department. for'some timo past, and ho undertook to'have" tho whole of Oho facts submitted to.him by his officers, with the object of having tho wishes ol tho City Council given effect to as soon as possible. The Minister , of Customs did not givo much encouragement aa to a reduction below-10 per cent, on electrical ecniipmont, or that the duty on.tho gas-plant would he foregone, notwithstanding, the fact that contracts had been completed' before- tho date of the. new 'tariff coming into,force.. He claimed that every merchant in tho colony would bo entitled to : tnp, same .concession if,granted: and in'that case tho confusion would he endless. . .
