THE DUTY ON FLOUR.
(Per United Press Association,) OAJIAI'U, September 'I. This morning a petition ivas largely signed by flourmill operatives protesting against tlio abolition of the duty on Aus- - tralian flour, on the ground that it woulcl seriously aifect t-hc labour market by closing iho New Zealand mills, thus throwing a largo number out of employment. Tho petition is being forwarded to the Minister of Customs and tho local representatives. The local Chamber of Commerce also wired tlio Minister and the representatives protesting against tho removal of the duty, pointing out that it would seriously atfcct town and country labour, and lead to a diminution in the price of land. The North Otago A. and P. Association ij taking similar action. ,
