PROGRESS MADE WITH TfiE BILL.

(Fnou Odr Own Correspoxdsxt.) AVELLINGTON, August,'3l. Sinco the House got to work in committee oil the Tariff Bill on Thursday very fair, progress has been made. A great portion of the schedules, howeveri remains'to bo dealt with, and if tho bill is to be put through- during tho conling week,- as is anticipated by many members, there, will bo no time 'to lose. Up till tlio present, sevon classes of gchodulo A (tlio dutiable, list), covering eight pages, havo been dealt with, and nine more classes of the same schedule, embracing seven pages, remain to he discussed. Then will follow tho freo ami preferential lists, which together fill i2 pagpa of ' the schedules. Some of the classes yet to be taken, including machinery of various kinds, aro of a contentious character, and may be expected to givo rise to Considerable discussion.

The classes so far dealt with in schedule ■ A include (1) foods anil articles for human consumption, (2) tobacco, (3) alcoholio beverages and materials for' making .tho same, (4)- non-alcoholic beverages and materials for miking tho same, (5) drugs, medicines, etc., (6) clothing and textile g9ods, and (7) leather and manufactures of ■ ' leather. Tho . classes remaining in this schedule aro (8) furniture and household furnishing, (9) china, glass, and earthen goods,' (10) fancy goods, musical instruments, .etc.', (11) paper manufactures and stationery, (12) manufactures o: metal, (13 timber and articles mado from timber, (14) oils, paints, etc., (15) agricultural and farm products] and (16) miscellaneous. , ! LIBERAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION AND THE GOVERNMENT.
