NEW YORK, August. 30. Two trains collided at Charleston, in Illinois, and 20 people were lulled, while 60 were injured.
Some conception of the number of lives lost annually' in America as a result of railway accidents may be gained from tho returns for the year ended June, 1905 (tho latest available). The number of persons killed 011 American railroads during the 12 months was 9703, while tho injured numbered no fewor than 86,008. This represents an average of 26 killed and 238 injured every day. Tho greatest, proportionate number of victims was found amongst railway employees—viz., tho trainmen,—of whom 1990 wore killed and 20,853 injured. Of these 230 were killed and 3543 wore injured while coupling or uncoupling cars. In collisions or derailments 672 cmnloyees were killed and 5413 wero injured. The number of passengers killed was 537, and injured 10,457, whilo tho casualties to persons trespassing wore 4865 killed and 5251 injured. During 1904 441 passengers were killed and 9111 wero injured,
