There was no wash-up on the Punt dredge. The master wires .that prospects are still poor. The.master of the Riley's-Revival dredge wires that he commenced dredging on Saturday on the Revival claim. The 'master of the Rising Sun dredge reports that ho dredged for 130 hours, and worked ahead 16ft last week on a cut 150 yards wide. It is stated on good authority • that the main reef in the Energetic mine, which is - owned by the Consolidated Company, has been struck in No. 9 level. The reef appears to be going down, and the prospects obtained ar_> very encouraging. The recently-erected Phcenix battery is working well. Gold is said to be visible ou the plates, and the 1 prospects are very good. The following is a summary .of the NewAlpine mine manager's report on the progress at the mine to date:—'"No. 7 level; The incline drive in this has'-been extended to , a point 50ft west of the vertical wiuzo. The ' rich leader will now be stoped out to ascertain its extent. Extension of level: The lever has now been extended 100 ft from the . starting-point. The water is beginning to make its appearance in the face. No. 12 1 level: Tho winze at the south end of ttie level has been sunk to a depth of 47ft. The reef varies from one to three feet in width, and is so far payable, with a grealer depth. North-end block: This end of the level will be sunk as soon/as the new rails arrive. The rise from ttfe centre of the level has reached a height of 30ft above the level. The block that'is under foot in No. 11 level should , be cut in about 20ft. or 30ft, further rising."

An Association telegram from Napier la 4 night says:—Mr H. AY. Brabant, S.M., resumed duly to-day after an absenco from tho bench of several months owing to illness. It is unofficially stated that Mr E. C. Cutten, who has been acting in his stead, will in future' take all the country sittings, including Uannevirko, and that Mr Brabant will take the Napier sittings only. Mr S. E. A pleasing function took place at the Caversham School last week, when tho teachers presented the janitress (Mrs 11. M'Knight) with a travelling rug on the occasion of her retiring from the position. Mr Young, head. master, in. making the presentation on behalf of the staff, expressed his Appreciation of the work performed by Mrs M'Knight during the three years she had charge of the school.

A Wellington telegram states that the following transfers are announced consequent on the promotion of Mr O. Cumming (Inspector of Post Offices) to, the'position of Controller and Accountant:—Mr O. B. Doll, at present assistant inspector of post offices in the central district, becomes inspector, and Mr J. H. Stevens, now postmaster at Hawera, will take the position of assistant inspector. '

The Bruce Herald reports tho death, at the age of 73, of Mr Robert Palmer, who was an old identity of Milton, having arrived in the early sixties. He was a blacksmith by occupation, and many years ago his smithy was in "the gully near Milton. The deceased was unmarried, and had no known relatives in the colony. A Nelson Press Association telegram says: " On the occasion of their golden wedding Mr and Mrs George Talbot, of Richmond, were presented with a silver tea and coffee service and salver in celebration of the event, and in recognition of Mr Talbot's long and faithful service on many public bodies, including the following:—As Mayor of Richmond, chairman of tho Education Board, member of the Harbour' Board, of the Victoria College Council, the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Stoko Road Board, Richmond Institute, and others. The presentation was made by the Mayor of Richmond (Mr Skect) and Mr Maginuity. chairman of the Education Board. Supporting these was a gathering of Mr and Mrs Talbot's family and a large assembly of their friends. The death is announced in New South Wales of Mr Frank Myers, a well-known Australian journalist, wjio first made his mark in Victoria tvhen, il " Tclomachus," lie succeeded the lato Julian Thomas ("The Vagabond") as the writer of a series of Saturday sketches in tho Argus, ciieily upon "Picturesque Victoria." Mr Myers represented the Argus at the opening of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin in 1889, and contributed an article upon that event to the columns of the Otago Daily Times on the morning after the inaugural ceremony.

Tho death took place yesterday morning at Musselburgh of Mr Joseph Deaker, a resident oi Otago since the early sixties. Mr Dealtcr was a compositor by occupation, and in that capacity was employed on the staff of this paper when it was published at Princes street South. In 1869 he joined the staff of our evening contemporary, and remained there till about a year ago, when he retired through ill-health. His, tastes were musical, and he was well known and much admired in connection with successive amateur combination which have flashed across the local horizon.
