VOLGA MO ACTIVITY.
1 (Per Uxited Press Association.) TAIHAPE, April 27. Old residents in the vicinity of Ruapelm arc not in the least excreised over the supposed trouble in regard to Ruapehu. Mr Peters, a. resident of Waioitru, says that when the district was isolated little or no attention was given to such indications of activity as reported last week. Now that the population is increasing, it is natural that indications of activity should excite alarm. The scare, he alleges, is without justification. Ho visited the crater lake seme time ago, and was satisfied that a mild eruption had taken place. In confirmation of that opinion, he saw ash a few days a'go on tho southern mountain, low down. The mountain is always snowcapped, .and the ash. deposited over the white mantle made the change all the more conspicuous. A sensational rumour is in circulation that passengers in the conch saw flames, accompanied by a loud report, issuing from tho mountain, but the drivers, on , being interviewed, denied having observed anything beyond a thick vapour, resembling a dark cloud.
A party left Waiouru on Wednesday to make the ascent of Ruapeliu and investigate. They experienced bad weather. After leaving the mountain house they journeyed on foot, reaching the snow-line. Continued bad weather deterred tliem from making further investigation, and they retreated. Vrom observations gained, the gent lemon _ arc satisfied that a disturbance of no serious nature has occurred, cither volcanic or thermal The colony can rest in peace that the old Ruapehu belchings are of the mildest nature. Those who made the ascent were Dr Patterson and Mr A. Petersen, of the Government Life Insurance Department.
