COALMINERS DISPUTE
THE QUESTION OF TRUCKING. (From Ocp. Own Correspondent.) CiIOJIWELIi, April 11. Tho dispute between tho Cromwell and Bamiockinirn Collieries Company and the Otago Coal .Miners' Union was before tho court here to-day. Inspector Green, of the Mines Department, and A. Forbes, for the union, had a confercnco with tho manager of tho company yesterday without effecting a settlement. Without calling evidence, but having heard the statement of. both parties, the magistrate, while declining to make an order, as tho matter in dispute— tlio question of trucking—was properly one for tho Arbitration Court, reviewed the position to find if it camo within his jurisdiction. Ho stated that, in his opinion, tho union was not. liable to do trucking. Tho inspector previously pointed out that five men were out of work in nonsequcnce of tho dispute, but tho magistrate distinctly stated that this was only his opinion as regarded the trucking, for it would require to be dealt with by tho Arbitration Court.
