CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

Tho following roports will be submitted it to-morrow night's meeting of tho City Council:—

Works Committee.—Tho Works Committee reports that the town clerk has been instructed as follows:—1. Act re an indemnity required by tho Maori Hill Borough Council in reaped of old bridgo to quarry, Woodhaugli, 2. Advise tire West Harbour Borough Council that tlio comnuttco adheres to its fonner proposal—namely, that the cost of renewal required to tho Logan's Point bridge bo borne in equal proportions by tho Otngo Harbour Board, the West Harbour Council, and tlio Dunedin City Council.

Water Committee.—The committee recommends that objection bo lodged 1 to the claim received from Margaret Coivan, James Cowan, and James Milne, of the sum of £359 for compensation in rcspoct of the waterworks extension scheme. Authority has l»en granted to pay a sum ct £30 13s Cd, being extras upon ■tlio contract for fencing the reservoir at Maori Hill. The resignation of Mr Ji. S. Brown as inspector on tho waterworks extension ban been accepted. Tlio account for ,ES3 lGs from Mr Cico. 11. Barr for reports, otc., in connection with tho proposed water supply to North-East Valley has been. approved. Tho application of tho Invercargill Shipping Company (Ltd.) for a water moler to bo placed at Rattray street wharf for .tho supply of water to the steamers Dimu aud Invercargill has been declined.

Gas Committee.—Tho committee recomluends that 150 tons of Caunol coal be ordered lor increasing the make and enriching tho gas, at a cost of about £4 per ton, as recommended by the gas nmnnger; also that 10 extra piles be driven to solid foundation at ■thrco points uudor tho gable end of tlio retort house, and a further 20 extra piles driven on account of the moving ot the site of proposed retort house (estimated cost £230). Tho tender of Mr ■ Malcolm Stevenson for tho supply of screenings at 5s lOd per cubic yard and spalls at 3s lid per yard, delivered aH- city gasworks, has been accepted. The order placcd with Messrs W. Coward and Co. for the supply ot Sin and tin cast-iron mains has been eancolled, and tho offer of Messrs Briscoo and Co. to supply 25 tons of Jin pipt3 nt £7 2s 3d per ton, and that ot Messrs A. and T. Burt to supply 25 tons of 3in mains at £7 3s Cd por, ton havo been accepted.

Tramways Committee. — The committee reeominoucls that the salary of the tramways IrniHo superintendent be at tlio rate of £450 per nnnuui, us Irom Ist April, 1307. Powerhouse start: Mr Vothorilt, chief engineer, having resigned liis position, the appointment of Mr Crawford, second engineer to first engineer, Mr Smith third engineor to second engijieer, nnil Mr Grifeg spare mini to third engineer, with pay tit tlio rnto of 16s, 14s, and lGs respectively, has been upproved. Tho application of the Band liotunda Committee for a contribution of the sum of 151) towards the erection of a baud rotunda nt St. Kikla lias been declined. The traffic returns lor tlio tramways for tlio fortnight ended lGt-h Marcli, 1907, as compared with the corresponding period for last- year, were as follow:—1007: Receipts, £'219-1 17s lid; mileage, -41.418 miles -18 chains. 190G: Hcoeipts, ihJOal Is lid; mileage, 43,75G miles 9 chains. lilectric Power and Lighting Committee.— The committee reports having resolved to adhere to its original offer to supply electrical onorgv to the lio3lvji Tramway Company— namely for tho sum of iSGI per annum.

Finance Committee.—The committee recommends that a gencr.il rato of Is 3tl in the pound be levied upon the annual rateable value of property in the City of Dunediu; that the water rales bo fixed at the same amounts as for the curront year—namely, 10s upon rateable values not exceeding £12 10s; 6 per cent, upon rut-enblo values not exceeding .EOT; 4 per cent, upon rateable values exceeding £300. Halt the foregoing rates upon buildings not supplied with water, and upon stores and warehouses. A sanitary rato of •ijd in the pound be levied upon the animal rateable value of property in Caversham and South Dunedin Wards City of Duncdin.
