THE MURDER OF WILLIAM WHITELEY.
EAY'XER SBXTKXCBD TO PJUTH. Prets Association—By Telegraph—Copjrigbt. : LONDON, March 22. Rayner has been sentenced to death for the murder of William Wliiteley, the " universal provider." (Received March 21, at 4.22 p.m.) At tho (rial Rayners aunt, J/misa Turner, Whiteley's mistress, testified that Wliitcley did not know Kayiier's mother till Rayner was four years' old. Rayner's testimony failed to establish that lift was Whiloley's son. Though he had seen Whiteley at his mothers liousd in his childhood he had never visited him till the. day of (lie murder. Ho then claimed sonsliin, which Wliitelcy neither admitted nor denied. Rayner asktd for assistance, and threatened to commit suicide. Whiteley went outside his otlice, ami when invited io return declined lo do so, saying, "J have sent for a policeman." Hayner declared that lm remembered no mure.
