Chief Herbert underwent a slight operation yestday, and will probably bo absent- from dijr for a few days, Mr John Gra'tm, M.H.R., chairms-n of the Nelson Harbouißoaid, is on a- visit to Dunedin. A goodly rnrnber of the legal profession assemhled at tie librarian's rooms, Supremo Court Library, jesterday evening at 5 o'clock to say farewell to'Mr J. If. Stenhouse, who has been promoted f:om the local Magistrate's Court offico to the charge of the oflico at Hokitika. Jlr J. C. Stephens (president of tho Law Society', of Otago) presided, and expressed the regret of those present and tho members of tte profession and their staffs generally at losing Mr Stenhouse, their appreciation of hit unfailing court-csy and attenand theii best wishes for his success in his new spaere. The Bresidont, amidst the' applause of those present., then handed to Mr Stenhouse 1 , as a tangible rosult of the above expressions, a beautiful gold albert and ponds Jit. During tlio afternoon, in Mr Widdowson, S.M.'s, room, Mr Stenhouso was presented by the sfaff of the Magistrate's Court with a very handsome travelling bag. Mr Widdowson complimented Mr Stenhouse upon lira thoroughly able manner in which he had discharged his duties in Dunedin, and wished him further promotion. Mr O'Callnghan added hiß testimony 'to Jfr Stenhousc's abilities, after whioh that gentleman suitably replied. Wo understand that Mr Stenhouso leaves on Monday for the West Coast to t»ko up his now duties.
