A DISABLED STEAMER.

Pi ess- Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, March 21, (Received March 22, at. 1.21 a.in.) I Tho steamer Colae, from Townsville, broke her tail-shaft in a. galo off North Solitary Island on Monday night, and was picked"up by tho CJity of Grafton next, day and towed into Nowcastlo to-day. Thn Rio Logo took in stiffening ballast yesterday, and will sail for ICaipara with the first favourable slant of wind. The Koonya loaded general cargo at the tonguo wharf yestcidav. and sailed in the afternoon for West port, via intermediate ]»rts. The Talune arrived at 8;30 a,in. yesterday from Auckland, via Kast Coast ports. She Sails from Dunedin at, i p.m. to-day for Auckland, via the usual intermediate ports. The Union Company's shore stall' arc busy putting the finishing touches oh the Tarawora at Port Chalmers. She is to be in readiness to sail on Monday for Wellington direct to supplement the present ferry service for tho holiday traflic. Latest advices received by the loeal agents (Messrs Turnbull, Martin, and Co.) statu that, ihc steamer Ayrshire is expected to arrive at Dunedin next Wednesday. She will probably sail again for bluff on the following day. The Plucky lowed tho Waralnh and Bell Flower clown to an anchorage in Deborah Bay yesterday afternoon to await a favourable slant of wind before sailing for Kaipar*.

The Invercargill was docked yesterday for overhaul and repairs. These include a portion of her rolling chocks, and a couple of plates on the port side, the result of a bump whilst entering Waikawa on flio 14ih insl. The Wainma, from Ncwcasllc, via Lyltelton and Tima'ni, is expected here io-nioirow lo discharge the balance of her coal cargo— about 1000 tons. Tho French ship Biarriiz. which was to call at Ilobart eu roulc from Ipswich lo San Francisco, is considerably overdue. She left Ipswich on August 31. Sh'c was last spoken on November 10, in 3 X., 26 W. 'l'ho Biarritz i« a steel vessel of 2737 tons, and was built at SI. N'azaire in 1901. ; Tho steel screw steamer Eiisnnta. which has Iwon chartered to load general cargo ■jat New York for Now Zealand ports, was (launched on the Clyde on January 17. Tho Kasama is tho second of two vessels built •lo tho order of Mcmns Bttcknall Bros., of London, the other being the Kalomo. Tiic Kasaina is of (ho following dimensions :- j Length, 413 f t; breadth, 50ft; depth, 29ft lOin. i Captain Jos! in. who has been on a visit, to New Zealand, reports that- Captain J: Liddell. forjnerly master of the Union Company's steamer Orawaili, in the Tasmanian tratio, is still engaged ai a Penang pilot. Captain Sledding, also formerly of tho Orawaiti, is obiof ofticoi- of one of the China Merchant Shipping Company's vessels. Tho Rivcrina is due to-inorrow morning from Sydney, via Wellington. In order to 1 connect with the mail train leaving Hobait for Lauueeston on Thursday, she 'will bo despatched from Port. Chalmers about. 5 p.m.! 10-n.orrow evening, instead of sailing on Sunday, as heretofore. Tho Kxhibition excursion trip by the Talune today promises to lie .well patronised, intending passengers having booked freely during the past couple of days. In order lo extend the time available in Christchurch as far as .possible, the company has arranged to detain the Moloia at Lyttclton until tho arrival of the 10.30 p.m. train from Christchurch on Saturday. Passengers will be landed at Port Chalmers on Sunday, and come up to town by train. Last year the different ocean steamship linos landed 1,198,434 passengers at, Now York, being 208,369 in excess of tho number convoyed thither from foreign ports in 1905. There was an increatc' in all the categories. The lines forming the Morgan Combine carried the greatest numbernamely, .226,663, in 261 trips; the Nord-deiitschcr-Lloyd, 193,553, in 128 trips; the Hamburg-American Line, 188,811, in 132 trips; the Cunard Line, 140,005, in 96 trips; and the Com'pagnic Generate Transatlantique, 77,250 passengers. Tho, steamship arrivals at New York rose from 996 in 1905 to 1083 in 1906. 11l view of the proposed equipment, of tho new Hamburg-American liner Europa with a swimming bath of continuously running sea water, it is interesting to note that electrio light baths have already been installed on board somo of tho Atlantic liners, this innovation being an entirely novel luxury in connection wth cccan travel. Tliceelccfric light bath consists inetal cylinder, open at. the top. its interior bciiiß covered by a series of electric light, bulbs. Tho bath-taker enters tho cylinder through a door,- takes a comfortable sent inside, his head',protruding through an opening in the top of tho cylinder. There is, of course, an export attendant in charge, who adjusts the electric current to tho requirements of the passenge; indulging in the bath. The "Aberdeen fleet is to lutvc an important addition made to it. ? Advice lias just been received that a. steamer of about 11,000 tons is now on tho stocks for tho Australian trade. She is lieing constructed on ; tho most up-to-date style, and it is stated that her accommodation for passengers will bo more extonaivo than that of the company's popular steamers Miltiades and Marathon.
