Speaking in regard to a Vancouver service, Mr Chapman (the I'uslmaslcr-geiici'al) said there was a possibility (if an improved service with a smaller subsidy from Australia. This end would bo attained by bringing Ni-w Zealand into the service. ]'t, was not easy to say what would happen ii the .Sau Francisco service were discontinued. A suggestion had been piade somo time ago to transform tho Vancouver ami Sau Francisco services into a (ourweekly schedule at- an accelerated speed; then, if the two lines alternated, they would have a regular fortnightly service, which would ho equally valuable to Aus-trt-lia and Xew Zealand. Such a service might lead to a greatly increased business, the Union Steam Ship Company seemed most, anxious/ to meet tho Government, but- other companies wcro ready to compete lor the citrringo of mails.
