Tho Jotter was referred to the Works Committee to act. WILKIK ROAD SEWER. The Engineer (Mr Slingcr) reported that, acting on instructions, lie had examined the wilkio road stormwater culvert from Anderson's Bay road to King Edward Toad. On entering tho culvert at the Bay road there was a detritus chamber, and tho outgoing part of the culvert had lieen reduced Bin in diameter for a Jong Mi of about Bft, aod then opened out again. This, ho considered, should he made the samo diameter as tho main line of culvert. From this chamber to Lambert's pipe works tho culvert, was in first-claes order both in construction and grade. At the S curve l>y the pipe- works there were two, cracke, bat lie did not consider these dangerous. Anyway, it was only u small matter 1o make those good by rciniorciug them from tho outside. The only bad feature of the whole of the culvert was whore the enst-iron water-main creased at King Edward road, hut provision had been made to allow the'water to pass this obstruction, pvovidintt the syphon was kept clear of detritus which was collecting there. He found that there wae a deposit about 3ft deep at the present time, and recommended that this should bo removed. It this catchment was kept clear ho did not think tlicro was any danger during floodtime. So far as tho construction nf the culvert, was concerned, it tow one of the ■best storm-water drains under tho board's In view of Mr CnruW's condemnatory remarks on this suffer, based on information supplied to him, several members expressed their satisfaction with fhe naiiiro of (ho engineer*' inspection. In these eireumsfancw. the committee thought, it would hn well to send tho matter back to the board to deal with. In the mcantimo he. hud askeil the engineer to satisfy himself as lo vho condition of t'uo present rising main. Tho onginocr'o report was lo the effect that the present rising main would lie sufficient to meet all demands upon it until it was necessary to inslal a. third pump. ' Tho engineer's report was α-i follows: — "Having careful , ; gone into the- stability of .tho rising main which is at present in use, I have the honour to report that I do iroS anticipate there is any likelihood of the rising mains bursting or giving any serious trouble in the. meantime, as they aro only taking the discharge from one pump into each main, but in (he event of additional piimp3 being .installed I should be afraid to reconimencl it .1.5 being safe. A considerable leakage is now taking plate which will be gathered and conveyed back to the storoge, tank hy the drains now being constructed for that purpose. .As ihcfe drains are in blue clay no percolation of sewage can take place to affect 1 lie surrounding properly." The report vrae adopted. It w,is agreed iJiat the tenders received be returned, and that the tenderers he informed that, in view of tlie engineer's report, lenders will ho called for on a future occasion. FIXASCE COMMITTKE.
