CHRISTCHURCH TRAM ACCIDENT.
(Pm United Pbess Association.) . CHIUSTCHURCH, February 19. An inquest concerning the death of Muriel Yera Elizabeth Marks, a- girl of 14, who died as the result of injuries sustained in. alighting from a- moving tramcar on the Papanui road yesterday afternoon, was held to-day. Evidence was Riven that the child had intended to get out at tho St. Albans lane stopping place, but the car stopped at a loop a short distance from the lane to allow a down car to pass, and did not stop again at the lane, passengers for that stopping place having alighted at tho Icon. When tho car reached the lano the girl jumped off and struck her head violently against one of tho poles, and sustained concussion of the brain, from which sho died 20 minutes afterwaixls. George GTaylaw Miller, the conductor of the car, said he knew nothing of the accident until one of the inspectors questioned liim alwut it. an hour and a-half afterwards. The ears did not stop r.t the lane if they stopped at the loop. Tho jury returned a verdictof accidental death, and recommended that a guard should be placed along the whole length of the cars, including the rear seat.}, such as that occupied by the decacsed just prior to her death; also that all cars should stop at tie St. .jMbiuw lane stopping place.
