A SERIOUS ASSAULT.

AUCKLAND January 23. In the Police Court this morning, before Mr Kettle, S.M., Lawrence Dufleo nnd George Seville, two firemen on tl\o Indraghiri, wero charged with having assaulted Ross M'Androw, a fireman, on January 16 £o as to cause him actual bodily harm. The evidence disclosed a dastardly assault, M'Androw had evidently incurred enmity through having informed tho captain of the broaching of some whisky in the cargo. The light took place when tho vessel was at. sea, and several of tho men wero fined by the captain. Georgo Cotterill, second engineer, said he saw tho fight, which, took" place on tho deok of tho ship, and he parted the men. M'Androw fell exhausted, and Saville stamped on his fuco, grinding his heol over his eye and rendering him unconscious. Witness seized Savillo to prevent further outrage, and then Duffee ran in and kicked tho prostrato lU'Androw over the _ heart and on tho face. The third ongincer and tho chief officer coming to tho rescue tho men wero dispersed. Dr Sharmau said that he attended tho injured man, whom ho found deeply unconscious and suffering from a severe concussion of llio brain, hemorrhage from tho lips, bruises on the face, and generally in a serious condition. The patient "was removed to the hospital. Tho magistrate sentenced each accused to a month's imprisonment, with hard labour. Tho prisoners then thanked his Worship, and obtained permission to shako hinds with the complainant.
