FOURTEEN NEW APPOINT-

MENTS.

Tlio conversazione tendered to Sir Joseph' Ward to-night, on the eve of his departure to attend the Imperial Conference- in London, drew an enormous crowd of people to the Parliamentary Buildings, Some 4000 people assembled, and there was a great crush in the rooms and lobbies of the big building. The gathering was a thoroughly representative ono, and nonpolitical. Soon after. 8 o'elook the proceedings were opened with speeches from the Mayor of Wellington (the Hon. T. W. Hislop) and Mr Skcrrett (the well-known Wellington barrister). Sir Joseph Ward, who was received with cheers, gave some important information in connection with the finances of the colony, prndioting that thio year's revenue would reach the unprecedented sum of £8,276,000, or £700,000 moro than that of the preceding year. He also gave an estimate of tho revenue- and expenditure in connection with tho Exhibition, as supplied by Mr Munro. The total estimated expenditure was £160,000, and the estimated net lose £35,000. The main interest in Sir Joseph's speeoh, however, centred in the announcement of the new Legislative Council appointment, which certainly contained some great surprises. No fewer than four of tho new councillors (including Mr Loughnan, who was secretary) wero on tho Land Coinmission. Tho names of the new councillor: are as follow:—
