It was clear moonlight at the time of the collision between the Buninyong and the Criffel. The preponderating testimony is that nothing approaching panic occurred, though a lady passenger accuses 6ome of the male passengers of behaving like madmen in their efforts to reach the boat 3. The effect of the steamer striking the towing hawser was to bring the barque, down on her at a great pace. The passengers were thrown down by the shock oF the impact, and it is marvellous how all escaped falling info the funnel and the accompanying wreckage. The fires were extinguished by a tremendous inrush of water, the engine-room staff barely having time to make their escape to the deck. Boats from H.M.S. Powerful and the Naval Department at Garden Island were on the scene in a few minutes. The tug, after depositing the Criffel's passengers in a. safe plaee, towed the steamer across to shallow water. (Received May 6, at 10.55 a.m.) The Buninyong has been towed off and taken to the wharf. ■
